Last year: Australia's Graham Marsh won at Olympia Fields, Ill., surviving a final-round 74 for a one-stroke victory over South Africa's John Bland. Marsh had an even-par 280 total.
Last week: Hale Irwin won the Ameritech Senior Open at Long Grove, Ill. - his fourth victory of the year and 17th on the tour. He finished with a 15-under 201 total for a three-stroke victory over Larry Nelson.
Notes: Gil Morgan is seeking his third senior major championship victory in one year, a feat accomplished only by Jack Nicklaus in 1991. Morgan, the 1978 and 1983 Los Angeles Open winner at Riviera, won The Tradition in April and the Senior Players Championship earlier this month. ... Irwin leads the money list with $1,735,250 in 13 starts. He won the 1976 LA Open. ... Arnold Palmer is making his 18th consecutive appearance in the tournament. Last year: Loren Roberts edged Bill Glasson by a stroke, closing with a 7-under 64 for a tournament-record 18-under 266 total.
Last week: Mark O'Meara won the British Open at Royal Birkdale, beating Brian Watts 17-19 in a four-hole playoff. O'Meara, the first player since Nick Faldo in 1990 to win the Masters and the British Open in the same year, closed with a 2-under 68 to match Watts at even-par 280. ... Fred Funk won the Deposit Guaranty Classic at Madison, Miss.
Notes: Funk has four top-five finishes in his last five starts. The former Maryland golf coach tied for third in the Kemper Open, tied for fourth in the Greater Hartford Open, and tied for fifth in the Quad City Classic. ... The FedEx St. Jude Classic is next week at Memphis, Tenn., followed by the Buick Open at Grand Blanc, Mich., and the PGA Championship at Sahalee in Redmond, Wash. ... Last year: Tammie Green won with an eagle on the fifth hole of a playoff with England's Laura Davies. Green closed with a 4-under 68 to match Davies at 13-under 203.
Last week: Sweden's Annika Sorenstam won the JAL Big Apple Classic at New Rochelle, N.Y., setting tournament records for 72-hole total (265), strokes under par (19) and margin of victory (eight). She shot 67-66-65-67 for her third victory of the year and 15th overall on the tour.
Notes: Michelle McGann won the 1995 and 1996 tournaments, setting the tournament record of 16-under 200 in her second victory. ... Sorenstam leads the money list with $661,724, followed by South Korea's Se Ri Pak ($648,211) and Sweden's Liselotte Neumann ($601,610). ... Last week: Chris Starkjohann won the St. Louis Classic, chipping in for birdie on the final hole for a one-stroke victory over Notah Begay. Starkjohann shot 69-67-64-63 for a 17-under 263 total.
Notes: Casey Martin is skipping the tournament. He missed the cut last week in St. Louis after playing the U.S. Open and two straight PGA Tour events. ... Past champions include Tom Lehman (1990), David Duval (1993) and David Toms (1995). ... The Dakota Dunes Open is next week in South Dakota.
