Columnist Peter Benton: Winters defends his Seniors title

MOE WINTER had a two-day score of 146 to successfully defend his Nevada State Seniors Golf Club's club championship title over the Sunbrook and St. George Golf Club courses in St. George, Utah.

Bernie Eubank won the overall net championship title with a 125.

In the age 50-54 flight, Joe Stanley captured low gross honors with a 152. Low net was shared by Frank Singer and Tim Farmer with 138s.

Ivars Gals prevailed in the 55-59 flight, winning low gross with 151. Neil Radermacher took low net with a fine 130.

Sammy Lee won the 60-64 flight low gross with 158. Low-net honors went to Bob Sweeney and Al Hurtado, who fired 134s.

The very consistent Howard Wieland won low gross in the 65-69 flight with a 147. Low net went to Howard Peiffer with 130.

Glenn Brammer hung in to win low gross in the 70-74 flight, coming in with a 168. Tom Mehas also eked out a win, garnering low net with a 137.

In the 75-over flight, Bill Youngs and Bill Bayer shared low-gross honors with 175s. Low net went to Al Alleman with a 135.

The PGA Tour, Senior PGA Tour and the Nike Tour each established charity records last year. Their combined total for charities reached almost $45 million.

The three Tour totals were: PGA Tour, $33,995,646; Senior Tour, $9,057,245; Nike Tour, $1,898,038.

Local bon vivant Jerry Kring recorded a rare double eagle while playing the Lake Las Vegas SouthShore course last week.

After a drive of 335 yards on the 520-yard, par-5, 13th hole, Kring, a Beau Brummell disciple, let loose with an 8-iron which carried the necessary 185 yards into the cup to achieve the most elusive prize in golf -- a double eagle.

Last week's Men's Interclub Challenge Match which featured 18-man teams from four local country clubs saw the Canyon Gate team emerge victorious with a total of 100 points.

Host club Spanish Trail and the Tournament Players Club shared second with 82.5 points, with Las Vegas Country Club brining up the rear with 77 points.

Six low gross and 12 low net matches were played by each team with one point given for winning the front nine, one point for the second nine and one for the total 18 holes. The maximum points any player could win in a match was three.
