Getting Results

* DEL WEBB DONATION -- More than $40,000 was raised this spring at the 1998 Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament at Del Webb's Sun City Summerlin, on the Highland Falls and Palm Valley golf courses. The funds were used for the construction of the first Nevada Ronald McDonald House, which will be a home away from home for families with seriously ill children being treated at nearby hospitals, and provide an environment of emotional support for their parents and siblings.

* RECORD-BREAKING CAMPAIGN -- The largest amount of money ever raised in a single United Way campaign in Nevada was recently announced. The reported pledges of $8.3 million shattered the previous record of $7.2 million. United Way is the community's furthest-reaching non-government health and human services provider. Local volunteers work with area charities to reach out to thousands of Southern Nevadans in need.

* NEVADA INSTITUTION GRANTS -- The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation recently presented six grants totaling more than $37 million, including $14.9 million to two institutions in Nevada. The Reynolds Foundation awarded grants to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, which will use its $10.4 million grant to construct a facility for homeless men, and administration center and a residential services center, and Great Basin Community College in Elko, which will use its $4.5 million to construct a clock tower, amphitheater, solarium and campus green. * BREATH OF LIFE -- The fifth annual Victory Valley Land Co., Breath of Life to Cure Asthma Golf Classic raised a record $64,700. More than 120 golfers braved searing 107 degree afternoon temperatures to play in the golf invitational. Proceeds benefited the Denver-based National Jewish Medical and Research Center. Former governor and Las Vegas Sun publisher Mike O'Callaghan is the honorary chair, while Las Vegas City Councilman Arnie Adamsen serves as executive chair of the annual tournament.

* PUTTING FOR PINTS -- Local golf courses will sponsor the third annual "Putting for Pints" at all "fore" blood centers 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Blood donated during this round will be used by local patients. Walk-ons permitted. United Blood Services courses are located at 6930 W. Charleston Blvd.; 3935 E. * BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS -- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada elected the following 1998-99 officers: John Bailey, chairman of the board/legal counsel; Larry Singer, chairman-elect; Greg Bruce, secretary; Robert Horito, treasurer; and Steve Des Champs, immediate past chairman. Special needs

* ASTHMA CAMP -- Camp Superkids, a camp for children with asthma, sponsored by the American Lung Association of Nevada, will be Aug. 7-9. If you have a child with asthma who you would like to attend Camp Superkids, call 431-6333 for information.

* WELLNESS CENTER MOVING -- University Medical Center's Wellness Center will move to its new location at 2300 S. Rancho Drive, Suite 205, on Aug. 3. The center provides primary care services for adults and children with HIV/AIDS. For more information, call 383-2691.

* MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS -- Music for HOPE Inc., is conducting its quarterly instrument drive during July. Donated instruments can be dropped off at KNPR at the West Charleston Campus of the Community College of Southern Nevada or Ron Hall Music on West Charleston Blvd. Cash donations are also needed for repair parts, accessories and related expenses. * CANCER STUDY -- The Jonsson Cancer Center at UCLA is conducting a new lung cancer study in Las Vegas. The study involves an experimental drug designed to cut off the flow of blood to tumors. More patients are needed to volunteer for the program. Las Vegas was chosen as one of eight sites nationwide for Phase II testing on humans. (Phase I testing was recently completed on animals and showed impressive results.) Information on the Jonsson Cancer Center is available on the Internet at: www.cancer.mednet.ucla.edu. * CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY -- The Elks will return to Las Vegas for the third time in the organization's history to celebrate its centennial anniversary from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 31 at Bally's hotel-casino. Tickets can be purchased in the registration area at Bally's.

* AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE -- German students with excellent English skills and motivation will arrive in August to experience the "American Way of Life." * RED ROCK VOLUNTEERS -- Friends of Red Rock Canyon will have an orientation to volunteering 1:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday at its visitor center. Volunteers are sought for the information desk, monitoring trails, helping with school groups and other tasks. For more information, call Jim Cribbs, 363-1921.

* NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS -- The James Seastrand Helping Hands of North Las Vegas is about "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" giving assistance to the frail elderly by means of transportation to medical appointments, running errands, taking them shopping or respite for caregivers.
