Windsor's temporary casino set to close

Supporters of casino gambling in Detroit argue that Casino Windsor across the Detroit River takes in a million U.S. dollars every day. That's about to stop, if only for a week.

The temporary casino that opened in 1994 is shutting down at 12:01 a.m. Thursday while workers put the final touches on the permanent Casino Windsor, which is to open July 29.

"It's been a long time coming," said Jim Mundy, a spokesman for the casino in the Ontario border city. "It's certainly going to be a nicer place for the customers."

Richard Dzbanski, 60, of Detroit, said he and his wife Ellen would check out the action at Niagara Falls before trying their luck at the new Casino Windsor. "We're going to wait until it settles down a little bit," he told The Detroit News.

State regulators are reviewing bids submitted by the developers chosen to run the three casinos proposed for Detroit, a process expected to take months.
