Memo to Jerry Royster: You might want to extend that vacation of yours a few more days. The Stars (48-49) banged out 15 hits for the second straight night under interim manager Tye Waller and rallied from a 7-0 fifth inning deficit to defeat the Iowa Cubs, 11-10, on Wednesday night at Cashman Field. Shortstop Juan Melo had two home runs and four RBI and Charles Poe tripled in Chris Prieto with the tying run in the eighth and then came in to score the winning run on a single by Pacific Coast League RBI leader George Arias. "It was good to see the guys fight and come back like that," Waller, the Padres' director of minor league instruction, said. "It would have been easy to quit in a game like that, but they just battled and battled." Waller will manage his last game with the Stars tonight. "Hey man, three days and that's it," he said with a smile. ... With the July 31 major league baseball trading deadline fast approaching, scouts from eight major league teams were at Cashman Field on Wednesday night. Many had their radar guns focused on hard-throwing Iowa starter Kyle Farnsworth, who was overpowering for the first four innings (four hits, no runs, seven strikeouts) before tiring. The 6-4, 205-pound right-hander was clocked in the low 90's. ... Speaking of trades, San Diego general manager Kevin Towers told USA Today that he wouldn't be averse to calling up Stars right-hander Matt Clement (9-5, 3.57) to fill a spot in the Padres rotation if a trade for a veteran starter like Pete Harnisch can't be worked out. "Sure, you'd like to have a veteran guy in a pennant race, but we don't want to mortgage our future," Towers said. "We haven't completely given up on those guys (Sterling Hitchcock and Mark Langston), but if Matt were to come up with us, he would pitch in the back of the rotation, so there wouldn't be that much pressure on him." ... X-rays on the right wrist of first baseman/designated hitter Eddie Williams were negative and Williams is listed as day-to-day with a bruised wrist. "It's a bruise, a contusion," trainer George Poulis said. "He should be out about three days." ... The Stars are 13-0 when they score 10 or more runs in a game.

Upcoming games

The Stars continue their series with the Iowa Cubs tonight at 7 p.m. at Cashman Field. Left-hander Heath Murray (6-7, 4.39) is scheduled to start for the Stars against right-hander Dave Swartzbaugh (9-3, 3.15). The series concludes with a special 6:05 start on Friday night with right-hander Matt Clement (9-5, 3.57) opposing Iowa right-hander Kevin Foster (1-3, 7.82).
