Crash stops suspect in bank robbery

A robbery suspect remained in FBI custody this morning awaiting arraignment for allegedly holding up a Wells Fargo Bank branch and then crashing his getaway sports car into another motorist.

The suspect, whose identity has been withheld, was treated at University Medical Center for a broken arm suffered in the two-car crash about 3:20 p.m. Thursday.

The man, described as wearing a black and red flannel shirt, reportedly stole one cash drawer of money from the branch at Cheyenne Avenue and Jones Boulevard, then fled in a Corvette, authorities said.

The Corvette's driver was speeding along Cheyenne when witnesses said it abruptly pulled a U-turn, lost control and crashed into a Jeep Cherokee sports utility vehicle at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Whispering Willow Road.

Aurelio Flores, FBI spokesman, said investigators believe the suspect saw a police car heading east on Cheyenne and possibly pulled the U-turn to avoid being caught.

The Cherokee's driver, whose identity was not released, suffered serious injuries and was taken to UMC. A condition report was not available this morning.
