Fishing Report -- July 24, 1998

LAKE MEAD -- Hot weather and excellent fishing for striped bass and channel catfish continue to be found at the lake, according to the Nevada Division of Wildlife. Boaters are using a variety of methods to catch stripers. Some are casting top water lures to the feeding fish while other anglers are fishing deep with downriggrs and drifting with anchovies. Most of the fish that have been caught range from one to three pounds. However, there have been reports of fish in the seven-pound class being taken. Better areas for catching stripers have been from Stewart's Point to Echo Bay, Pyramid Island to the Hemenway Wall and from Callville Bay to Swallow Bay. Channel catfish are being caught in shallow water in the early morning hours.

LAKE MOHAVE -- Boaters who have been braving the hot weather and bouts of high winds have been rewarded with good action for striped bass and channel catfish. The most popular spot for stripers continues to be the Nevada side of the lake from the north power lines to Owl's Point. Trolling with lures and drifting with cut baits has been taking fish in the 13 to 14-inch range. Channel catfish are being caught with nightcrawlers in the narrows above Cottonwood Cove. The better success for catfish is being found after sunset. Rainbow trout are scheduled to be stocked today from Willow Beach to mile marker 45. Anglers fishing from shore at Willow Beach should be cautious because a number of recent observations of rattlesnakes.

WAYNE. E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- The area has been experiencing very warm weather and occasional rain showers this week. Fishing has been somewhat slow for both largemouth bass and rainbow trout. Anglers report they are having some success for trout, but they are putting in quite a bit of effort to get a bite. Over the weekend several trout that weighed up to three pounds were pulled from Cold Springs and Haymeadow rservoirs.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- Very warm weathre and fair trout fishing are still being found at the lake. Weed growth in the lake is beginning to be a problem for shore anglers.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- Fishing is still fair for rainbow trout and small largemouth bass. Anglers continue to have trouble locating crappie.

SCHROEDER RESERVOIR -- Rainbow trout fishing has entered the summer doldrums in the lake. Stream fishing has also been below par because of the hot weather.
