School board delays change in bus service

The Clark County School Board decided Thursday that bus service will not be changed in regard to Cunningham Elementary School until the matter is reviewed by the transportation committee on Aug. 11.

Parents expressed worry at the cancellation of routes from their neighborhood off Nellis Boulevard and Desert Inn Road. The parents in the neighborhood received post cards stating that they had been receiving bus service since 1990 because of dangers along the walking route.

"I don't see how the dangers on the route have lessened," said Joy Kendall, a parent with two children that attend Cunningham. "The crossing guard they are talking about adding will only make a very small part of the walk safe."

District 18 representative Mark Manendo also gave testimony at the board meeting asking that the school board take a closer look at the situation.

"There are a lot of new residents in our area and they got the cards that said that the hazards are no longer present on the route to the school," Manendo said. "This had them wondering what the dangers were and why they were no longer a problem."

The hazard was the 45-mile-an-hour speed limit on Nellis, a street that the children would have to cross. The hazard would be addressed by the crossing guard.

"Nellis is still a very dangerous street with or without a crossing guard," Manendo said. "Parents are always concerned about their children and we appreciate the board's concern and willingness to work with the community."

School Superintendent Dr. Brian Cram that the district has decided to continue busing until a transportation and safety meeting could be arranged. The meeting on Aug. 11 will be held at 6:30 p.m.
