Weekend Update: Music, Theater, Etc.

Hula time -- Polynesian-flavored Hot Lava performs poolside 7 p.m. Saturday at the Black Mountain Aquatic Complex, 599 Greenway Road, in Henderson. Part of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department's Splishin' Splashin' Swingin' Summer Concert Series, the event will also include a Hawaiian pig roast, swimming and sand volleyball games. Jazzing things up -- A free concert, sponsored by Henderson Parks and Recreation Department, at 7:30 p.m. today will feature the Buddy Charles Concert Jazz Orchestra. The 19-piece band, which has performed together for more than a decade, consists of world-renown jazz veterans, as well as high school and college musicians. Bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnics to the concert at Civic Center Plaza, 200 Water St.

Twinkle, twinkle -- Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame member Booker T. Jones and his band perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Clark County Government Center Amphitheater, 500 Grand Central Parkway, as part of the Jazz Under the Stars concert series. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the gate; children under 12 are free. Call 455-8200 for more details.

Colorful concert -- The Nevada Jazz Orchestra kicks of its series of three summer jazz concerts on Saturday at the Rainbow Library Theatre, Buffalo Road at Cheyenne Avenue. The "Jazz Under the Rainbow" series will feature works written and/or arranged by local composers, including the orchestra's director, Barry Ross, who penned its signature piece, "Funkier Than Dirt." Admission to the 7:30 p.m. performance -- as well as those on Aug. 8 and 22 -- are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students. For more information, call 243-7312.

Viva Cri-Cri -- Meet the popular Mexican children's character, Cri-Cri the cricket, when the Mexico Vivo Dance Co. takes the Winchester Community Theater stage, 3130 S. McLeod Dr., today and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The 30-member ensemble performs a program of songs and dances children for all ages. General admission is $7, $5 for seniors and children.

A real toe-tapper -- Katherine Kramer, whose dance choreography work is featured in the film "The Horse Whisperer," hoofs it in "Tap Roots," a program designed to teach school-age children about jazz tap dancing's beginnings through dance, music, story-telling and audience participation. Admission to today's 7 p.m. performance at Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is $3.

Theater

Spunky heroine -- Nevada Theatre Co. presents "Ramona Quimby," a play based on children's author Beverly Cleary's book series about the irrepressible third grader. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday's 2 p.m. performances at the Summerlin Library and Performing Arts Center, 1771 Inner Circle Dr., are $5.

Whodunit? -- Proceeds from an interactive dinner mystery comedy, 7 p.m. Saturday at 6200 West Oakey Blvd., will benefit the Nevada Association for the Handicapped. Presented by the Mystery Cafe Theater Co., it's up to the event's audience members to figure out how a tycoon visiting a tropical island meets his suspicious death. Tickets, which are $50, can be purchased by calling 870-7050 ext. 26.

Prehistoric fun -- The Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center in Henderson is the site for this year's annual "Great Dinosaur Race" at 9 a.m. Saturday. Children, ages 3-5, race Big Wheel bikes decorated to resemble dinosaurs to promote understanding of the giant creatures which formerly roamed Earth. Early registration for the race is recommended; call 565-2121. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.
