Letters: Signs of city's growth show up in road debris

It's astounding the things I see lying in the road during my training as a marathoner.

I've noticed an increase in car parts (spark plugs, fan belts, lug nuts and even exhaust pipes). I often wonder about the state of mind of the driver when the item fell off, broke off or rotated off, etc. How about the driver that empties the car ashtray or their fast-food containers at the intersection while waiting for the light to change.

Also, it seems as if no one likes pennies, I see them everywhere. Once a month, I have a penny run, and collect all the pennies during that long run. I usually average about two cents per mile. I've also noticed an increase in abandoned shoes. I would really like to hear the answer when mom asks the question "Where are your shoes?" or "Can you tell me why you are sporting one shoe today?"

A few years back, I would run about in these same areas, and enjoyed the open spaces, little wild critters, and savor the "fresh air." I guess what I'm noticing is that our city is on a fast track, trying to catch up with the rest of the big cities across the country, and I should be contented the unwanted dogs that have been turned out into the desert are just as fearful of me as I am of them.
