Columnist Paula Del Giudice: Eatery committed to conservation

IT'S NICE to see new businesses open, especially ones that are unique. If they're involved in the community and help support it, that's even more terrific.

That's why it's good to hear the Sportsman's Galley, which opened earlier this year on West Spring Mountain Road, is so actively supporting the outdoors and wildlife conservation.

The Sportsman's Galley has agreed to contribute 10 percent of the value of meals or retail merchandise purchases that Ducks Unlimited members make through 1998 at the restaurant back to that organization.

DU members should present their membership cards when they are ordering and the Sportsman's Galley will present a voucher, insuring that 10 percent of the grand total will be contributed in the DU member's name back to Ducks Unlimited.

If you're looking for an interesting place to dine, this is it. The Galley specializes in wild game entree,s including duck ravioli, blackened buffalo steak, pheasant, alligator and venison. The restaurant is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

* 'DOZING OFF: Elko County officials defied Forest Service regulations and violated the Clean Water Act last week when they bulldozed a section of the Jarbidge River of northern Elko County, before a cease and desist order from the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources stopped the work. The County was seeking to reconstruct the road by digging a new channel for the river. It proceeded without the necessary permits. At risk is a separate and distinct population segment of bull trout. According to Trout Unlimited, stranded trout were rescued by local residents with buckets and returned to the stream below the diversion channel. Trout Unlimited has sent a letter to the Elko County manager indicating it intends to file suit to stop the rebuilding of the road along the Jarbidge River.

* ANTELOPE ROAMERS: The Nevada Division of Wildlife will hold a free pronghorn antelope hunting seminar Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Clark County Fire Training Center, 4425 W. Tropicana Avenue. NDOW biologists will be on hand to provide information on hunting antelope. Hunting safety information will also be furnished. No advance reservations are required, but seating is limited. Hunters who have been issued antelope tags will be given priority seating.

* BUNCH OF TURKEY APPS: Fall turkey hunting applications and 1998-99 upland game bird hunting regulations will be available by Monday, Aug. 10 according to the Nevada Division of Wildlife. Applications for Nevada's fall turkey hunts must be received by mail at the Hunt Application Office in Fallon to be eligible for the tag drawing. Regulations brochures are free and will be available at most stores that sell hunting licenses and NDOW's Las Vegas office, 4747 W. Vegas Drive.

* SAGE ADVICE: Applications for the special sage grouse hunt on the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge are available at fishing and hunting license agents and Division of Wildlife offices. A total of 150 permits will be issued for the hunt, 75 each for hunting on Sept. 12-13 and Sept. 19-20. Applications must be received by NDOW's Reno office at 1100 Valley Road by 5 p.m. on Aug. 7. There is no cost for the permit, though applicants over the age of 12 must have a valid hunting license prior to applying.
