Columnist Peter Benton: Acker holds slim lead in SNGA points

FORMAT FOR THE two-person scramble played by Las Vegas Country Club members was best drive, followed by each player hitting from the chosen location. This procedure was repeated until the ball was holed out. Each team member had to hit and use a minimum of eight tee shots.

In the Carnoustie Flight, the Bill Bolton/Bob Morrow pairing won handily with a 56. The Chuck Weigman/Bill Lattin team placed second with 58.3 while the Frank Neilsen and Don Dombrowski duo came in third at 59.4.

Nawaz Qureshi and John Bowers prevailed in the Cleneagles Flight with a 58.95. Allen Vogel and Jerry Bartman were second at 59.2, followed by John Lobrovich/Jack Vergiels at 59.5.

The Royal Birkdale Flight winners were Dom Cembeiro and Tom Yarbrough with 58.35. Howard Ickes and Maury Hack followed with 60.05. In third place at 61.35 was the Jack Libby/Dan Keiserman pairing.

Linda Jablon and Carol Oshins won the St. Andrews Flight with a 61.7. Donna Evans and Audrey Lattin placed second at 62.05. Third went to the Laurie Durant/Halina Vergiels pair with 63.25.

Acker leads

With six of 10 tournaments complete on the Southern Nevada Golf Association's Designated Tournament Leaderboard, Frank Acker holds a slim lead in Championship Division points with 132.

Brady Exber follows closely with 129. After that, it's Dallas Massey, 105.7; Al Kuykendall, 93.5, and Bill Harvey with 72.

Larry Keever's win in the recent Sun City Amateur Championship propelled him into the Senior Division lead with 130.7 points. Rounding out the top five are Mike Diehl, 116; Charlie Pape, 110; Stuart Reid, 81; and Jon Schilling, 80.4.

Mark Kikowsky has a commanding lead in the Net Division, having amassed 140.2 points. Blane Midkiff follows with 100. Then it's Randy Acosta, 86; Jim Licausi, 78; and Tony Troils, 73.7.

Clark County residents seeking cheaper summer rates should check out the American Golf Club's $29.25 program.

Rates with this players association membership are $35 per round Sunday through Thursday after 11 a.m., and Friday and Saturday after 1 p.m. at the Las Vegas National layout.

Rates at their Wildhorse and Painted Desert courses are $29 per round (at the same times as above), with even lower rates available after 3 p.m.

Entry deadline

Entries close this evening for the annual Butch Snider/Jim Grigsby Firefighter Golf Tournament, scheduled tomorrow and Thursday at Angel Park.

The entrance fee into this 8 a.m. scramble tournament is $75, with proceeds benefitting the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Southern Nevada.
