Letter: Voting is best way to address issues we often complain about

I believe that every election that takes place, every opportunity we have to make our influence felt and our voices heard, is vitally important to us. The decisions made by the people in our government, courts, and schools will have a direct effect on the quality of life for all who live and work here. We should make every effort to ensure that only people of the highest character and qualifications are elected. But we will have no say in that if we don't take the time to vote.

It is not too late to register to vote in the primary. Registration forms are available, and satellite locations will be set up to register people as late as the deadline of Aug. 1. For more information, please call the Clark County Election Department at 455-8683.

The chances we have to effectively address the problems we so often complain about are few and far between. To take these opportunities lightly, or to opt out altogether, is only to cheat ourselves, and weaken the democratic process by which we have this right to choose who will govern us.

Voting is not only our right. It is our duty. I urge you to take this duty seriously, and cast your responsible and informed votes in the primary, and the general election on Nov. 3.
