Mage takes lead in senior tourney

Gary Mage, looking for his PBA senior victory of the year, took the lead after the second round of qualifying in the PBA Showboat Senior Invitational.

Mage, who began the day in 21st place, rolled seven of eight games at 235 or better - including highs of 267, 258 and 274 - for his 3,789 pinfall total and a 57-pin lead over PBA Hall of Famer Dave Davis. Mage's last title came at the 1997 Boise PBA Senior Open.

Davis, who has three senior titles, remained in second with high games of 257, 235 and 267. Vince Range climbed from 81st place and was in third with 3,705 pins.

Another nine pins behind was Junichi Yajima, a seven-time Japanese PBA Player of the Year. Pete Couture, looking for his third title of the year, was fifth with 3,693 pins.

Qualifying continues through Wednesday evening. The top fourth of the field will return Thursday morning for an additional round of qualifying, after which the field will be trimmed to the top 24 for match play Thursday evening and Friday.

The top five after match play will compete in the championship round Saturday.
