* SALON-A-THON -- Three Las Vegas area salons will participate in a nationwide Salon-a-Thon to raise money for The AIDS Relief Fund for Beauty Professionals Sunday. A hundred percent of the proceeds raised at Ulta3 salons nationwide will provide assistance to hair stylists and others in the profession who have AIDS or HIV. Participants in the event will be entered in a drawing for free prizes, including dinners for two at local restaurants, tickets to Las Vegas shows and various free salon services. The event is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

* DESERT SPRINGS BEANIE BABIES -- The Desert Springs Hospital Auxiliary has donated "Princess" and "Erin," two Beanie Babies, to local organizations and to a young child needing a bone marrow transplant. The auxiliary received a shipment of the toys to sell in their gift shop, but decided to donate a portion of their shipment to charitable children's organizations. Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer, the Ronald McDonald House of Greater Las Vegas, Make-A-Wish Foundation and Child Haven each received three "Princess" and three "Erin" Beanie Babies, valued at $150. The Ronald McDonald House and the Diabetes Treatment Center of Desert Springs Hospital both received $1,000 gifts from the auxiliary. Eight other organizations received $500 gifts from the auxiliary.

Honors

* KLAS-TV HALL OF FAME -- Approximately 100 people attended a special luncheon when three new inductees were entered into the KLAS-TV Hall of Fame. Receiving duplicate plaques of those placed on the wall at the station were Frank Batten Sr., chairman of Landmark Communications Inc., parent company of KLAS-TV; David Greenspun, chief engineer, 1953-1960; and Angelo Molinaro, film editor, 1962-1975. Greenspun and Molinaro attended the celebration along with members of their families. The Hall of Fame presentations are held every year on the anniversary of Channel 8's debut 45 years ago. Other special guests were Belle Greenspun, Dr. Richard and Ann Greenspun and their two children, Lynne Silva, Hugh and Renee Johnson, Bea and Harry Brody, Jane Broadfoot, Ruthe Deskin, Gloria Molinaro, Steve and Leilani Molinaro, John Molinaro, Kathy and Jerry Peck and their four children, Danny and Robin Greenspun and son Jamie, and Elizabeth Guiffre. Guests were presented with a copy of "Reflections of a Proud History -- KLAS-TV," a brochure on the rich, colorful history of the station and employees were presented with a specially inscribed commemorative shirt honoring the 45th anniversary.

* UNLV SENIOR THEATER PROGRAM -- The Department of Theatre Arts at UNLV has been honored by Stage Directions magazine for its pioneering work in senior theater. The UNLV Department of Theatre hosted the first senior theater conference in 1993 and followed with others in 1995 and 1997. It provides older students an opportunity to study with outstanding faculty members.

* NURSE OF THE YEAR -- Annually, the March of Dimes hosts a "Nurse of the Year" event to recognize the efforts of the finest nurses serving Las Vegas. This year, a new category has been announced -- The Distinguished Nurse of the Year Award. Nominees for this award must have a minimum of 15 years of service to the Southern Nevada community and be an active member of the profession. The criteria for selecting the winner will be based on the individual contributions of this nurse to both the profession and the community. Any citizen of Clark County may nominate an eligible nurse, and the deadline for nominations is Aug. 23. The recipients will be announced at a banquet on Oct. 23. * RANCHO REUNION -- Rancho Hill School Class of 1978 will have its 20-year reunion Sept. 25-27. Activities will include a reacquaintance social, Hawaiian night, picnic and barbecue. For reservations or more information, call 255-5641.

* '60S REUNION -- Las Vegas High School Class of 1968 will have its 30-year reunion 7-11 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Gold Coast hotel-casino. All classes from 1960-1969 are invited to attend. * ASTHMA CAMP -- Camp Superkids, a camp for children with asthma, sponsored by the American Lung Association of Nevada, will be Aug. 7-9. If you have a child with asthma who you would like to attend Camp Superkids, call 431-6333 for information.

* CHAPEL NEEDED -- The Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, needs to raise $500,000 to build a chapel for mourners, so they will be sheltered from the elements, at a cost of $1.2 million. The state of Nevada contributed $200,000, matched by the federal government, and veterans and the private sector have raised about $300,000. Although much of the labor and equipment is to be donated, older and infirmed friends and relatives of deceased veterans may not be able to attend the funeral of the departed without this chapel. * DIABETES EDUCATION PROGRAM -- Desert Springs Hospital is encouraging possible diabetes patients to be tested as part of an early intervention program. The first phase of this program will include a variety of television and radio public service announcements. For details on how you can be tested, call 369-7560.

* WELLNESS CENTER MOVING -- University Medical Center's Wellness Center will be moving to its new location at 2300 S. Rancho Drive, Suite 205 on Aug. 3. The center provides primary care services for adults and children with HIV/AIDS. For more information, call 383-2691.

* CANCER STUDY -- The Jonsson Cancer Center at UCLA is conducting a new lung cancer study in Las Vegas. The study involves an experimental drug designed to cut off the flow of blood to tumors. By preventing new vessel growth, cancer cells starve and die. According to registered nurse Eve Stork, more patients are needed to volunteer for the program. Las Vegas was chosen as one of eight sites nationwide for Phase II testing on humans. Phase I testing, Stork said, was recently completed on animals and showed impressive results. * CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY -- The Elks will return to Las Vegas for the third time in the organization's history to celebrate its centennial anniversary from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at Bally's hotel-casino. Tickets can be purchased in the registration area at Bally's. The organization has 450,000 members with lodges and temples extending into Canada, Virgin Islands, West Indies, Mexico and Panama.

* AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE -- German students with excellent English skills and motivation are arriving in August to experience the "American Way of Life."
