Parents' input on academics welcomed

Parents on Tuesday can weigh in on the discussions shaping academic standards in Nevada schools.

The Nevada Council to Establish Academic Standards has been overseeing the implementation of state laws passed last year aimed at raising standards. The legislation requires the development of tests and creates timelines for creating new standards.

Now council members want citizen input about standards in mathematics, English and science. The meeting begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday with an informal question and answer period followed by a workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clark High School, 4291 W. Pennwood Ave.

As part of its work, the council has hired the Council for Basic Education, a Washington, D.C.-based education consulting firm, to lead a group of Nevada educators in examining standards. The group met in January and more meetings are scheduled.

Topics examined by the group range from how much phonics should be used in teaching reading to when to teach multiplication tables.
