Part-time touring player leads Showboat tourney

Mike Tryniski grabbed the lead Monday after the first day of qualifying in the Professional Bowlers Association Tour's Showboat Invitational.

Tryniski, who placed fifth just three weeks ago in North Brunswick, N.J., toppled 1,928 pins with an average of 241. Tryniski, a part-time touring player who is seeking his first career title, had a consistent day with high games of 259, 259 and 246.

Pete Weber, a 24-time titlist, trails Tryniski by 11 pins. Weber, who will be inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in November, has dropped 1,917 pins. He had a high game of 299.

Amleto Monacelli, an 18-time titlist who is the only international member of the PBA Hall of Fame, is in third with a pinfall total of 1,904.

Rounding out the top four is Bill Guthrie who has dropped 1,898 pins.

Qualifying continues today and Wednesday before the 162-man field is trimmed to the top 53 for the final round of qualifying Thursday morning. The top 24 will then return Thursday evening for the first round of match play.

After the final two rounds of match play Friday, the top four will return to compete for the $46,000 top prize in Saturday's finals.
