Shafer uses 300 to move into lead

LAS VEGAS -- Ryan Shafer rolled games of 300, 279 and 278 Tuesday night on the way to taking the third-round lead in the PBA Showboat Invitational.
Shafer has dropped 3,929 pins for an average of 245 and a 71-pin lead over Dave Husted and Paul Koehler. Husted, a PBA Hall of Famer, had two 300 games on the way to increasing his pinfall to 3,858. He was joined at that figure by Koehler, who advanced from 30th place on the strength of games of 299, 278 and 269.
Rounding out the top four was Michael Haugen Jr. with 3,786.
After another qualifying round Wednesday, the 159-man field will be reduced to 53 and, on Thursday, to 24. After match play is completed Friday night, the top four scorers advance to Saturday's finals.
