11-year-old boy helps deliver baby sister

LAS VEGAS - Vincent Alemar will have quite a tale to tell his sister in a few years. The 11-year-old boy helped deliver the baby girl in the back seat of the family car as his father raced to a local hospital.

Gladys Alemar's baby wasn't due until June 25, but she started having labor pains early Wednesday and figured that the baby was probably on its way. After her water broke, her husband, Francisco, 37, loaded his wife into the back seat of the family car along with their youngest son, Vincent.

The family was trying to make the 20-minute drive to Columbia Sunrise Children's Hospital when Mrs. Alemar, 39, began to feel the baby's head coming out. Vincent was holding his mother's feet on his lap while she stretched out on the back seat.

The husband kept looking back and asking if everything was OK, but his wife instructed him to just "keep driving."

The mother finally realized time was not on her side.

"I said 'Vincent, now you have to catch the baby,' " the mother recounted from her hospital bed Wednesday afternoon.

The unassuming Vincent did just that, even though he said his new sibling was "slimy."

"When I grabbed the head, the rest of the body just popped out," the boy said.

Alemar was pulling into the parking lot when Tiffany Joli made her debut, weighing 5 pounds, 10 1/2 ounces.

Mrs. Alemar said Vincent was as calm as he could be. His experience has made him change his mind about becoming a chef; now he wants to be a doctor.

Vincent just shrugged his shoulders when asked about his first delivery.

"I was calm," he said.

Tiffany is the Alemar's fourth child and first girl.

"They'll probably be special friends," Mrs. Alemar said.

Mother and daughter will be released from the hospital on Thursday.
