Editorial: Silver State's plan should be trashed

The proposal is in the early stages, but Silver State is seeking the county's approval to rezone the land so it can build a transfer station, maintenance yard and truck wash on Gary Avenue. Even Teller, the silent half of the Penn and Teller duo who recently moved into a new home in the area, is speaking out. "Now I'll have a view of the glittering Las Vegas Strip at night with silhouettes of garbage trucks," Teller said. "You put a dump in an industrial location; you don't put it where people live."

Silver State has had a tough time finding land for a transfer station in the western part of the valley, as homeowners have repeatedly said it doesn't belong near a neighborhood. Silver State spokesman Keith Lynam told the Sun's Adrienne Packer that to keep garbage rates low, the transfer station needs to be kept close to the company's customers.

But Silver State can do better than this. A garbage transfer station near a neighborhood is not compatible. The Planning Commission, which hears Silver State's plans tonight, should reject this proposal that doesn't make any sense.
