Gold Strike fire disrupts cellular service to lake

Cellular telephone service to Lake Mead Marina, shut down because of the fire at the Gold Strike casino, is expected to be restored by this weekend, 360 Communications said.

Power had been shut off to the cellular transmission site atop the Gold Strike's 17-story hotel tower, which was not destroyed in Tuesday's fire that gutted the 40-year-old casino. As a result, cellular service to the Marina was affected, Kevin Halpin, 360 Communications manager in Southern Nevada, said.

"Our transmission site was not damaged ... but the power was cut to the area temporarily," Halpin said. "We're monitoring the situation closely and will turn up the system there as soon as power is restored to the area."

Halpin said another site in Boulder City is providing some coverage to the affected area along U.S. 93 and 95.
