State hires firm to post election results on Internet

Members of the board, chaired by Gov. Bob Miller, decided Thursday to spend $20,000 to hire Governet to set up the Web-based automated election reporting system for the secretary of state's office.

The Legislature's Interim Finance Committee, meeting next Thursday, also must approve the contract.

The plan is to post results on election night for the Sept. 1 primary and the Nov. 3 general elections. And in future elections Governet will devise a system to allow the secretary of state's office to quickly to add and post returns from counties on its home page.

Secretary of State Dean Heller, the state's chief election officer, said citizens can find results through his office's World Wide Web site, http://sos.state.nv.us.

Until recent years, the secretary of state's office did not even tally votes on election nights. Unofficial results were provided by news wire services.
