Letter: Campaign signs are unattractive, useless

It was fun to read the recent article "Sign Language" critiquing campaign billboards, but it also made me wonder why we need these signs at all. I can't remember ever seeing one that helped me make an intelligent decision about a candidate.
The signs are usually unattractive, and block views of the landscape. Let's get rid of them.
In fact, if all types of campaign ads were eliminated, the need for campaign donations would be reduced, and level the playing field. Perhaps one or two televised/radioed debates could be allowed -- for those candidates with petitions signed by a certain number of (verifiable) registered voters.
Local newspapers could list those candidates, and their positions on issues, a few weeks prior to elections. All campaign spending could be outlawed. This might end big money influence and return power to the people.
