David Lutter reported to work June 15 and handed in his resignation on Wednesday, citing difficulties caused by a prolonged illness in his family, the Lahontan Valley News and Fallon Eagle Standard reported.
Police Chief Don Phipps says he's disappointed, but understands Lutter's problems.
His arrival was postponed twice because of his father's illness and surgery. He was no more than on the job last week than his father had a nervous breakdown. That was when he quit.
Lutter was selected for the Fallon job in mid March out of more than 50 applicants from across the country.
