Health care providers receive training in domestic violence prevention

The training on Monday and Tuesday is part of the National Health Initiative on Domestic Violence, a project of the San Francisco-based Family Violence Prevention Fund.

Nevada was one of 10 states chosen by the fund last year to participate in the initiative.

"Health care providers are often in a unique position to help those who are victims of violence in their homes," said Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa, who chairs Nevada's Domestic Violence Prevention Council.

"Many of these victims suffer injuries that force them to seek medical care. Helping these victims requires sensitivity and skills that come with training and experience."

In 1997, there were more than 20,000 reports of domestic violence in Nevada.
