Letter: Special Olympics athletes represented Las Vegas well
Tuesday, June 23, 1998 | 11:53 a.m.
To these 48 Special Olympics athletes, the challenge that confronted them was just as momentous as the NBA Finals that took place that same weekend. I can attest that they battled extremely hard for the many medals they had received for themselves and the Las Vegas area.
It was extremely touching when they would come up to me with tears of joy in their eyes and say "Coach Booze, another one for Las Vegas." They returned with a lot of gold and silver medals in track and field, and our baseball team won the state championship.
Special Olympics coaches and volunteers train year-round to be their best. We build sports skills, confidence, strength, motivation, self-esteem ... not just for the athletes, but for everyone involved.
Our head coach, Jim Decker, did a great job putting this all together. From all the athletes, coaches and chaperones, many thanks.
