Editorial: To them, all the world is a cartoon

It also helps to have a twisted sense of humor to fire off those one-liners or even a mere few words that can make a cartoon a good way for a reader to kick-start the day.

Opinion pages, in particular, owe a tip of the hat to cartoonists for providing visual alternatives to viewpoints that often are too difficult to describe in words. Of course, we don't let cartoonists feel too important. Newspapers have this unwritten rule, which is: It's OK to publish photos of columnists but it's 10 lashes to the editor who allows the mug of a cartoonist to see print.

It is in that spirit that we greet more than 200 cartoonists, including the Sun's own Mike Smith, who are in town today for the 41st annual Association of American Editorial Cartoonists convention at Caesars Palace. Participants will also include former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres, White House adviser Rahm Emanuel and former Republican presidential candidate Steve Forbes.

The only thing we want to know is, who's going to lampoon the cartoonists?
