The funeral for former Sheriff John Moran will be carried live at 11 a.m. Thursday on Las Vegas 1, a 24-hour local cable news channel.
Prime Cable subscribers will be able to view the services on Channel 1 or 39 from St. John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 5300 El Camino Road, officials of the station that is operated jointly by the Sun, Prime Cable and KLAS Channel 8 (CBS), said today.
This will be the first live coverage of a local event outside of Las Vegas 1's normal programming, station officials said. The station went on the air in April.
Delivering the eulogy will be former undersheriff Eric Cooper.
Moran, who died Monday of cancer at age 75, was a local law enforcement officer since 1948. He was elected sheriff in 1982, was reelected twice and retired on Dec. 31, 1994, after 12 years in office.
Moran is credited with dramatically reducing crime in Southern Nevada, as well as starting the local police academy, helicopter program, major case squad, 911 system, search-and-rescue unit, bike patrol, gang diversion unit, Secret Witness, DARE and Police Employees Assistance Program, among others.
