* REACH OUT AUCTION -- Bally Gaming has donated 10 classic slot machines to help raise funds for children and their families who are infected with or affected by the HIV/AIDS virus. Reach Out will have a wine and cheese party 6-8 p.m. Friday, along with a live auction for the slot machines. * FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL -- The Summerlin Women's Club will host its second annual Food and Wine Festival/Silent Auction 2-5 p.m. Saturday at the Santa Fe hotel-casino, 4949 N. Rancho Drive. Proceeds will benefit Shade Tree, a local shelter for women and women with children. The Las Vegas Athletic Club will offer free membership vouchers to all attendees. * LINKS FOR LIFE -- Links for Life Golf Tournament, hosted by Colliers International, raised $100,000, which will benefit Child Haven, a county-run shelter for abused, abandoned and neglected children. This year's funds will go toward the construction of a new multi-use playground for the children at the facility. The event was sponsored by Lake Las Vegas Resort, Mirage Resorts, Bank of America, Nevada Title Co., and Nevada Power Co.

Good sports

* MEDIA GOLF TOURNAMENT -- The Mount Charleston Alpine Village and Golf Resort will sponsor the first media golf tournament 9 a.m. July 11. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Nevada and Big Brothers Big Sisters. There is no initial cost for players. The media and their families are invited to escape the summer heat and enjoy a day of golf and recreation. In addition to golf, the outdoor ice skating rink and miniature golf course will be open for family members. Refreshments will be served and surprise activities for the children will take place all day. Following the tournament, there will be an awards ceremony and barbecue. * TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT -- The first "One for the $1,000,000" Hole-in-One Golf Shootout will be Thursday through Sunday at the Callaway Golf Center, 6730 S. Las Vegas Blvd., benefiting the Variety Club of Southern Nevada. Qualifying will begin Thursday. Customers pay $2 per ball, or $5 for three balls. Any player who shoots a ball into a circle surrounding a flag 120 yards away will be entered into the qualifiers' drawing bin for the 3:30 p.m. Sunday finals. A hole-in-one automatically qualifies a player and 15 people will shoot for one million dollars. A raffle will be held daily. The qualifying schedule is: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 383-8466.

* GOLF MARATHON -- Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada is sponsoring its first golf marathon Monday at Canyon Gate Country Club. Course play will be limited to 42 golfers, along with a variety of special contests, gifts and prizes including vacation packages to Hawaii, Pebble Beach, and Scottsdale for golfers who raise the most funds. Each player is asked to set a pledge goal of at least $25 per hole with a $2,500 minimum. All funds will be used to support local Junior Achievement activities. * HELP CURE ASTHMA -- The fifth annual Victory Valley Land Co. "Breath of Life to Cure Asthma Golf Classic" will be Monday at the SouthShore Golf Club at Lake Las Vegas Resort. Proceeds will benefit the Denver-based National Jewish Medical and Research Center, the nation's only medical center exclusively donated to research, patient care and education for chronic lung and immune system diseases. Dan Stewart, from Victory Valley Land Co., and John Knott, of Las Vegas-based Sullivan & Knott Inc., a commercial real estate firm, are co-chairing the golf invitational. Former governor and Las Vegas Sun executive editor Mike O'Callaghan is the honorary chair. Las Vegas City Councilman Arnie Adamsen serves as executive chair. Packages start at $350 per golfer and include green fees, golf cart, tee package, lunch, post-tournament reception and Calcutta reception and awards ceremony. * HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR -- The Muscular Dystrophy Association of Southern Nevada has announced the Chin's Humanitarian of the Year honoree, Claudine Williams, chairman of the board -- Harrah's Las Vegas. Williams will be honored at a gala dinner today in the Arizona Charlie's ballroom. The evening will consist of a silent and live auction, a gourmet dinner prepared by Chin's and live entertainment. In 1992, Williams was the first woman inducted into the Gaming Hall of Fame and remains the only woman to have received this distinguished honor. Special needs

* SUMMER FOOD PROGRAM -- The Upward Bound office at UNLV is currently accepting applications for a summer nutrition program for teenagers. Registration for the program is today and Thursday. The summer food program, which runs Sunday through Aug. 10, provides a balanced breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks for each student at no cost. Presentations on academic subjects, drug education and career opportunities will be offered, as well as field trips. The program is sponsored by the state Department of Education. * HENDERSON SALVATION ARMY -- The Henderson Salvation Army is in dire need of food supplies for its operation. The Henderson Salvation Army has a lack of sites where the public can drop off food donations and its staff is stretched thin running around town picking up donations. To help, Del Webb offered the Desert Willow Community Center, Sun City MacDonald Ranch, 2020 Horizon Ridge Parkway, as a public drop-off site. Easily stored, primarily boxed and canned food are preferred. Anyone interested in helping out can drop off donations at the front desk of the Desert Willow Community Center.

* NEW GOODWILL STORE -- The grand opening of Goodwill Industries of Southern Nevada Inc.'s fourth retail store in Las Vegas takes place 9 a.m. Thursday at 4632 S. Maryland Parkway. Stop by throughout the three-day grand-opening celebration for great bargains and coupons worth 25 percent off your next purchase at any of its other three stores. Goodwill is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide training, employment and job placement services for people with disabilities and other special needs.

* ARTHRITIS EXERCISE TRAINING -- The Las Vegas branch of the Arthritis Foundation will host a leaders' training workshop today for Twinges in the Hinges, a warm weather recreational exercise program designed to ease pain and improve joint mobility. The branch will also host a leaders' training Thursday and Friday for People with Arthritis Can Exercise, a land-based exercise program designed to promote socialization, balance body awareness, coordination and endurance. Both workshops will be conducted at JHC Health Center. The training workshops, each 1 1/2 days long, are designed to prepare individual to become class instructors for the program. Both workshops include lectures, demonstrations and experiential learning in working with people who have arthritis. Baccalaureate or an equivalent degree in an exercise or relevant health field such as occupational or physical therapy, dance or movement therapy, physical or adapted physical education, nursing, etc., is recommended for the PACE training. Current certification is basic first aid and/or CPR is required for both workshops. Preregistration is necessary. * FREE SECURITY -- American Fence and Security seeks to donate fencing and fencing-related products to 50 nonprofit organizations. As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, American Fence and Security is taking applications for their "50 Fences for 50 Causes" program. During this program, the company will donate 50 fences ($2,500 each) to nonprofit organizations in need. The donations will be given to schools and organizations that align with one or more of their three focus areas: education, environment and community wellness. * RESCUE MISSION -- The Las Vegas Rescue Mission is in need of volunteers for its Mission Thrift Store. If you can volunteer, call Jesse Houston at 382-1766. The women's and children's shelter also is in need of large-size women's clothing and underclothes, razor blades, coffee, and children's clothing sizes 3-6.

* FILM FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS -- The REEL Las Vegas International Film Festival is recruiting volunteers to assist with administrative and event activities associated with the nonprofit group. TRLVIFF will host CineVegas, an annual film festival in Las Vegas equivalent to the likes of Cannes, Sundance and other renowned festivals. Preliminary plans have been set for a December 1998 CineVegas festival with a kick-off event slated for Saturday at the Huntridge Theater. The festival will also provide an entertaining, educational and cultural event for Las Vegas locals. * FAMILY SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS -- The 6252D Army Reserve Hospital needs volunteers for its Family Readiness Group. The purpose is to assist soldiers' families during deployment.
