Editorial: Cops' time should not be for the birds

North Las Vegas has Nevada's highest crime rate and was ranked America's 13th most violent city in a 1994 survey. You'd think the North Las Vegas Police would have their hands full pursuing dangerous criminals.

Somehow, though, they seem to have a lot of time to pursue 77-year-old Marion Goodwin, who feeds corn, milo and wheat -- all biodegradable items, by the way -- to pigeons and sparrows in empty lots and alleys.

Police have cited Goodwin repeatedly for littering, and he faces a July 17 pretrial hearing for an alleged infraction that occurred last month.

It's good to see the police are capable of so assiduously pursuing wrongdoing. Now we'd encourage them to apply this diligence to the pursuit of the murderers, armed robbers and car thieves who find North Las Vegas so attractive.
