Letter: M.A.S.H. originated as city program, not Catholic charity

To correct some errors in a recent letter from Evie Kinney regarding M.A.S.H. Village:

M.A.S.H. was originally established as a city program and I was not hired to run M.A.S.H., but to absorb M.A.S.H. into our agency. Thus, the name was changed to M.A.S.H. Village and it became a totally separate 501(c)3 charity, with its own governing board and a need to develop its own source of funding.

She was right that we are not a part of Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada and are not directly responsible to the Bishop of Las Vegas. She is incorrect is saying we are not a Catholic charity -- we are in the same category as Covenant House in New York, Boys's Town in Nebraska, Dominican Hospital in Henderson, Notre Dame University and many other Catholic agencies who operate charitable programs with a separate board of directors.

We acknowledge that Catholic Charities is the principal agency of the Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas, but they are not the only Catholic related agency in Las Vegas working with children in need and their families.
