Williams, Arias power Stars

TUCSON --- Eddie Williams hit a three-run home run and George Arias added his Pacific Coast League leading 22nd homer to back the combined six-hit pitching of Stan Spencer and Brian Wolff as the Las Vegas Stars earned a split of their four-game series with the Tucson Sidewinders with a 7-2 victory on Monday night.

Williams' three-run blast in the sixth inning off Tucson starter Bob Wolcott (6-3) broke a 2-2 tie. The three RBI moved Williams (174) past both Sandy Alomar Jr. (172) and Jerry Davis (173) and into sixth place on the Stars' all-time RBI list. It was also his 49th career homer with Las Vegas, just one behind Rob Nelson (50) for third place in that catagory.

Arias added a long solo shot in the eighth inning off Sidewinders' reliever Bryan Corey to increase his PCL home run lead to three over Omaha's Chris Hatcher (19). It was also gave increased Arias' PCL-leading RBI total to 70.

Spencer improved to 6-3 by allowing just five hits and one walk over seven innings while striking out four. Wolff, recently recalled from double-A Mobile, pitched two scoreless innings to wrap up the win.

Las Vegas (37-38), which moved into a second place tie with Tucson in the PCL's South Division with the victory, opens a four-game series with the Nashville Sounds tonight at Cashman Field. The Sounds, the triple-A affiliate for the Pittsburgh Pirates, are led by former Green Valley High prep All-American Chad Hermansen and also recently signed Pete Rose Jr. to a contract.

Rose, the all-time major league career hit leader, is expected to attend several games at Cashman Field this week.
