Letter: New basketball coach is a winner for UNLV

Contrary to what has been reported, the search committee's sole purpose was to narrow the list of candidates to the three finalists. Nothing more, nothing less. There was to be no "ranking" of candidates and never, at any time, did the search committee express to the administration of the university their "preferred" candidate. That was not our role.

All three finalists were strong candidates and, in truth, I thought all could do the job. But I also knew that the ultimate decision would rest with the administration, which must hire someone it could work with and support, who possessed the ability to motivate a team that had forgotten how to win, who could be a role model to student athletes, who had thick enough skin to handle criticism in the media, who was enough of an extrovert to handle Las Vegas and who possessed a vision for the Lady Rebel basketball program. In the end, that nod was given to Miller. End of story.

I truly believe we have a winner in Miller. I also believe that, if those 100 critics stand in line with me this season and buy game tickets to support the Lady Rebels, we'll be well on our way to turning this program around under the capable leadership of Miller.
