Letter: Teachers, students are kind, generous

On May 1, I came home from running an errand and found a petunia plant sitting on my block wall. Attached to the plant was a "Happy May Day" card from students at Cunningham Elementary School, from the first-grade classes of Miss Robinson and Miss Northrup and the kindergarten class of Mrs. Silvernail-Smith.

The cards had been made by the students, who, I guess, delivered the plants. What a sweet and out-of-the-ordinary happening! What a very dear memory for these young children to carry with them -- hopefully through their lives. A very large improvement for graffiti and destruction done by children in these times.

And, above all else, pin a medal on these teachers, who are obviously teaching their students more than subjects required in the classroom. A love-thy-neighbor attitude which I thought had gone by the wayside.

I am only one of the many people in the neighborhood who received this gesture of friendship, but I, for one, appreciated it. My petunia has been planted in my yard and, hopefully, will flourish, and I hope the caring, kindness and generosity instilled in these children by these outstanding teachers will also flourish and grow.
