Lyon residents want status quo on land use

Nancy Henker, a member of the Lyon County Public Lands Planning Commission, said a proposal to expand the restricted area from 45,000 acres to 350,000 acres would serve no purpose.
She told the board it faces three alternatives: Status quo, some limitations or a total shut-off to motorized vehicles in almost the entire area.
The planning area covers portions of Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties. Most of it currently is open to motorized vehicles.
The county commissioners voted 3 to 1 to send a letter to the BLM opposing the expansion and asking an additional 60 days allowed for public input.
Commissioner Bob Milz opposed the action, urging the board instead to first meet with bureau officials.
