MGM Grand to build two golf courses

BOULDER CITY -- The community known for its no-gaming edict is looking toward one of Las Vegas' grandest hotel-casinos to build two upscale golf courses in town.

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to begin negotiations with the MGM Grand hotel-casino, one of three companies that submitted proposals in April to build the golf courses.

Those rare Boulder City residents starved for gambling shouldn't get too excited. City Manager John Sullard said the agreement with the MGM Grand will prohibit gaming and it won't allow a hotel or homes along the course.

"This will be only golf courses and a club house and a practice facility," Sullard said.

In its proposal, MGM representatives said they want to reserve about 900 acres that hug the foothills off Highway 95 and just north of Highway 93. About 425 acres will be used for the courses, one of which will be pricey with green fees of at least $100.

The hotel company has no plans for the remaining acreage.

Sullard said the city preferred the MGM Grand over the other two applicants -- Red Ridge Developers and Meadowbrook Golf Inc. -- because the MGM has the finances to finish the project and the others would have to raise funds.

Before negotiations begin, the Planning Commission must approve an amendment to the master plan to allow for recreational uses on the parcel. The city must also develop a long-range water usage and delivery system that satisfies the Southern Nevada Water District.

Sullard said he expects the water and zoning issues to be resolved by July.
