Stars end road trip win win

MEMPHIS --- The Las Vegas Stars had a very early wakeup call this morning so that they could catch a 7:30 flight to Dallas and then a connecting flight home to Las Vegas.

But the long journey home was made a whole lot nicer thanks to a 6-5 victory over the Memphis Redbirds on Wednesday night at Tim McCarver Stadium.

The win snapped a six-game losing streak to Memphis and also helped the Stars (17-15) end their eight-game road trip with a 3-5 record.

Shortstop Juan Melo broke a 5-5 tie in the ninth inning when he crushed reliever Rick Croushore's first pitch of the inning over the scoreboard in right-center for his first home run of the year.

Catcher Mandy Romero and center fielder Ruben Rivera also hit solo homers for the Stars, who open an eight-game homestand at Cashman Field tonight against the Tucson Sidewinders, the triple-A team for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Las Vegas also begins a stretch which sees it play 20 of its next 24 games at home.

Paul Menhart (2-2) picked up the victory in relief for the Stars while Dario Veras earned his third save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
