Kennedy, 24, was denied bail because the arrest violated the terms of his probation from a previous arrest in California, according to Darla Salling, Nevada Parole and Probation administrator for Washoe County.
Kennedy was arrested Monday by Reno police at the Gottschalk's store in Park Lane Mall, said Deputy Chief Jim Weston. Kennedy allegedly concealed two bottles of cologne, with a total value of $90, and left the store before being stopped and detained by security.
Since Kennedy is actually on probation in California, it will be up to a judge there to decide how to punish Kennedy for the probation violation, Salling said.
Kennedy played just one season for the Wolf Pack after being recruited out of Chaffey Junior College following the 1994-95 season. He lost his junior year of eligibility after being forced to sit out the 1995-96 year to fulfill academic requirements.
He missed the 1996-97 season at UNR when he suffered a knee injury during a preseason practice.
Kennedy was UNR's third-leading scorer last season, averaging 11.3 points per game. He started all 28 games for the Pack and led the Big West Conference in assists, averaging 6.4 per game.
