Awards honor four law-enforcement 'workhorses'

They aren't names that make headlines every day, nor faces the community might recognize in photos. Yet the four people receiving awards today as part of National Police Week are hailed amongst their peers as some of the biggest contributors to law enforcement's success in Southern Nevada.

A ceremony set for this morning marked the second year the American Society for Industrial Security has hosted an opportunity to applaud local law enforcement.

ASIS members include police officers, chiefs of hotel security and guard services, locksmiths and private investigators.

Months ago, the local ASIS branch submitted letters to agency heads throughout Clark County seeking nominations for a particular breed of officer -- a "work horse."

"The award is not for being in a shootout or saving a life," said committee chairman Joseph Callo, a special agent with Nevada's Gaming Control Board who moved to Las Vegas after 20 years in New York as a police officer. Callo was responsible for getting the Las Vegas chapter to host an awards ceremony that other chapters across the country have been doing for years.

"The award is for someone who has worked very diligently for his or her community."
