Editorial: Looking to make meetings efficient

The commission recently has had to address some weighty policy issues, which of course take longer than usual. But as the Sun's Jeff Schweers reports, other reasons for the meetings lasting beyond the scheduled deadlines are proclamations and special recognitions, which can eat up to an hour of a meeting.

These kinds of events have a place, but if they're causing commissioners to spend less time on important policy issues, they should either be placed at the end of the meetings or reduced altogether. Anybody who works in the private sector or government knows all too well a meeting that never seems to end because of side issues. Reducing the number of proclamations should result in more time for a better dialogue on the truly important issues facing the valley.
