Freezing temps hit northern Nevada

As if Tuesday's snow from the Sierra across northern Nevada to Austin weren't enough evidence, this morning's freezing temperatures should be.

Fallon, Lovelock, Tonopah, Eureka, Ely and Winnemucca all dipped to freezing or below this morning, with Ely's 23 the coldest. Winnemucca's 25 tied that city's record low for the date, first set in 1961.

Enough snow fell in the Sierra to bring out chin or snow tire requirements on Interstate-80 over Donner Summit. Flurries also fell along the U.S. 395 corridor in western Nevada.

Austin was surprised on Tuesday by 10 inches of post Memorial Day snow while Winnemucca's wettest May on record picked up another 0.03 of an inch of precipitation for a total of 3.57 inches.

Not even southern Nevada escaped the chill, although its readings were more moderate. Tuesday's high of 74 tied the coolest maximum for the date, first set in 1962.
