Jail officer found dead after standoff

North Las Vegas Police say a corrections officer for City of Las Vegas killed himself after threatening his wife with a gun and holding off police for nine hours.

Emmanual Waiters, 52, an officer at the city jail, was pronounced dead early Tuesday after officers used tear gas to enter his home at 5055 Jacarilla Lane near Lone Mountain Road in North Las Vegas.

Police were called to a domestic disturbance at the house about 3:15 p.m. Monday. When they arrived, the man was barricaded inside the home with his wife and her 8-year-old son. The woman safely ran out of the house with her son, police said.

When the SWAT team eventually entered the house shortly after midnight, they discovered that Waiters had been dead for several hours, police said.
