Las Vegas Stars scorecard -- May 27, 1998

The Stars are finally beginning to get healthy again. Starting pitcher Stan Spencer, put on the disabled list on May 14th with a sprained toe and foot soreness, threw in the bullpen before Tuesday night's 8-5 victory over Colorado Springs and said "everything went well." Spencer (3-0, 3.07) said he will pitch in a simulated game before Thursday night's game with the Sky Sox and could be activated if everything goes well. "We'll see after that," he said. "It's been feeling a lot better." Spencer credits a new shoe and a new taping job by team trainer George Poulis with helping combat the pain. ... Outfielder Chris Prieto, who has been in-and-out of the hospital because of complications with pain medication perscribed to fight a sore thumb, also has begun working out with the Stars again. Prieto has had just one at-bat since April 14 and has had two stints on the disabled list. "He looks pretty decent," said Stars manager Jerry Royster. "It's nice to have him back." ... Still no word on if or when left-handed reliever Ben VanRyn will join the Stars. VanRyn was designated for assignment by the Padres on Saturday which means he could be claimed on waivers by another team. A decision on VanRyn's future could come as soon as today. ... Outfielder Aaron Guiel still hasn't received his new glasses and continues to sit the bench until they arrive. ... The Stars, behind a home run by catcher Mandy Romero, a two run double by third baseman George Arias and a key pinch two-run single by Rick Prieto opened their 12-game homestand on a winning note Tuesday night with a 8-5 win over Colorado Springs.

The Stars continue their series with Colorado Springs today with a rare mid-week afternoon game starting at 12:15. Right-hander Scott Sanders (0-1, 3.07) will start for Las Vegas and will face right-hander Steve Shoemaker (2-5, 8.64). The series continues on Thursday night with a 7:05 p.m. game. Left-hander Heath Murray (3-2, 3.15) will start for the Stars against right-hander Mark Brownson (4-3, 4.18). The series concludes Friday night at 7:05 p.m. with right-hander Kevin Lomon (0-4, 4.93) opposing Star Sox left-hander Michael Farmer (1-1, 5.74).
