Letter: Elephant rides more dangerous than thought
Wednesday, May 27, 1998 | 10:48 a.m.
I have been talking to the Shriners for the past four years about the danger of elephant rides. The vast majority of riders on these wild animals are innocent children. The documented incidents are innumerable from TV programs, newspaper articles and eyewitness testimony to elephant rides gone bad.
The Shriners do so much to help children. Why do they play Russian Roulette with healthy children for a $3 ride -- that could tragically be the ride of their lives. Clearly an elephant ride is an accident waiting to happen.
For the safety of the children and the good of the animals, be safe -- not sorry.
