* MILLIONAIRE BACHELOR AUCTION -- Paul Holm Productions is presenting "A Millionaire Bachelor Auction" 7 p.m. Thursday at Studio 54 at the MGM Grand. Tickets are $35-$85 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Nathan Adelson Hospice. * NMI GRANT -- The Wells Fargo Foundation has granted $15,000 to the Nevada MicroEnterprise Initiative, formerly known as Nevada Self-Employment Trust, to support the Microloan Program. NMI's Microloan Fund provides nontraditional lending to start-up and expanding businesses.

* GIVING KIDS A SHOT -- Students from Louis Wiener Elementary School presented a check for $7,153 to the American Cancer Society. The children raised the donation by participating in the National Association of Basketball Coaches "Giving Kids a Shot" campaign -- a nationwide initiative held in February and March between Applebee's restaurants and the NABC's Coaches vs. Cancer program. Students sold paper basketballs to fellow students, faculty, friends and family.

* POURING CONCRETE -- The Southern Nevada Building Materials Association donated a special pour of concrete paving worth $75,000 to Opportunity Village. The paving project helped improve a piece of Opportunity Village property which had been a dirt lot. Companies participating in the three-hour event and barbecue luncheon included Northstar Concrete, Ready Mix Producers, Ashgrove Cement Co., Fibermesh Corp., Master Builders, Soft-cut International, Operating Engineers Union, and Laborers Union.

Good sports

* NICK HORN TOURNEY -- Local golfers, who are also baseball fans, will have a chance to test their skills against major league baseball Hall-of-Famer Harmon Killebrew, when he comes to town later this month to appear in the Nicholas J. Horn Memorial Golf Tournament. The four-man scramble begins 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Angel Park Golf Club. It's a fund-raiser for medical and nursing scholarships at UNLV and the University of Nevada Reno. Event organizers are the Clark County Medical Society and VistaCare. The Valley Health System is the official sponsor of the tournament. Other sponsors include Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, Aspen/Salls Church Insurance and St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance. Participants will receive a team photo with Killebrew and an autographed baseball. Killebrew is the national spokesman for Vista Hospice Care Foundation. More than $3,000 worth of prizes will be given away to the top teams, including $1,000 shopping sprees to Copeland's Sports for the first-place, low-gross and low-net teams. A car will also be awarded to any player who makes a hole-in-one on the designated hole. Fees are $220 and include greens fees, cart, practice balls, lunch, two drinks and a buffet dinner. * LINKS FOR LIFE -- Colliers International, formerly known as Stuart Mixer Commercial, will host its annual Links for Life Golf Tournament Monday at Lake Las Vegas Resort. The event is expected to raise $100,000 for Child Haven, a county-run shelter for abused, neglected and abandoned youths. The funds will be used to build a recreational playground for the children, a bike path, a basketball/volleyball court, water fountains, a grassy area to play sports and possibly a gazebo to provide shade. The project will be named "Links for Life Playground." The tournament begins at 10:30 a.m. and is sponsored by Lake Las Vegas Resort, Mirage Resorts, Bank of America, Nevada Power Co. and Nevada Title Co. * EXPLORING AWARDS -- The Exploring division of the Boulder Dam Area Council, Boy Scouts of America will stage its annual awards reception 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the East Stake Center, 4040 E. Wyoming Ave. Sheriff Jerry Keller will be the keynote speaker, highlighting the long relationship the Metropolitan Police Department has had with Exploring. The first-ever Explorer Gold Award will be made to Angela Tomaselle. UMC will be recognized for its 25 years of service to the youth of our community. * HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES -- Southern Nevada high school scholar athletes will be honored at the NIAA Southern Nevada High School Scholar Athletes dinner 6:30 p.m. today at the Country Star American Music Grill. The awards dinner will honor scholar athletes from Southern Nevada, 10 of whom are chosen by the NIAA and Elmore Sports. The evening showcases both effort and determination of students who have succeeded not only athletically, but in academics as well. The event is open to the public. * HENDERSON POLICE OFFICER -- Henderson Police Officer Joe Yzaguirre has been awarded the 1998 Drug Awareness Resistance Education Officer of the Year Award from Clark County Students Taking Action to Terminate Unlawful Substances. DARE is an educational program to help keep kids from using drugs. Yzaguirre has been a Henderson police officer since Feb. 21, 1989 and a DARE officer since Jan. 17, 1994. The award will be presented at 4 p.m. today in the Little Theatre at Reed Whipple Cultural Arts Center, 821 Las Blvd. North.

* 1998 GRANT RECIPIENTS -- The Union Pacific Foundation Board of Trustees recently announced its 1998 grant recipients and will be hosting a luncheon in their honor on June 5. The 1998 recipients are American Red Cross-Clark County Chapter, Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas, Family and Child Treatment of Southern Nevada, Lied Discovery Children's Museum, Lincoln County Library-Caliente Branch, St. Rose Dominican Health Foundation and UNLV Foundation. * GOLDEN RULE FINALIST -- VistaCare hospice volunteer Neva Douglas was recently recognized as a finalist in the JCPenney Golden Rule Awards for her outstanding efforts. Neva, a cancer survivor, "has a real commitment to caring for dying people in a manner than maintains their dignity and enhances their quality of life," Dee King, Vista Care volunteer coordinator, says. * LOCAL HERO -- Scott Bianchi of Las Vegas was among the 57 winners of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association's 1998 VITA ("life") Wireless Samaritan Awards recently, a contest honoring individuals from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, whose use of a wireless phone in an emergency resulted in a safer community, a prevented crime or a dramatic rescue. Hearing cries for help, Bianchi helped save the life of a homeless man who was drowning in a rain-swollen drainage ditch. He used his wireless phone to call 911 and directed mini-bus operators to shine their headlights into the ditch. The only access to the man was through a barbed-wire topped fence. Scott urged the man to cling to the fence until rescue teams arrived, cut through the wire and pulled the man to safety. Bianchi will attend a dinner in Washington, D.C., attended by members of Congress, industry CEOs and keynoted by House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

* CONSERVATION AWARD -- Channel 10's Outdoor Nevada was presented the Wayne E. Kirch Wildlife Conservation Award in a ceremony at the Nevada State Museum. In presenting the award, Wildlife Commissioner Marlene Kirch, daughter of the late pioneer Nevada sportsman and conservationist, recognized Channel 10 for producing approximately 300 stories on Nevada's outdoors, recreation and wildlife. The award is named for Fish and Game Commissioner Wayne Kirch, who served on the Fish and Game Commission for more than 25 years.

Special needs

* SUMMER FOOD PROGRAM -- The Upward Bound office at UNLV is currently accepting applications for a summer nutrition program for teenagers. Registration for the program is June 10-11. The summer food program, which runs June 14 through Aug. 10, provides a balanced breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks for each student at no cost. Presentations on academic subjects, drug education and career opportunities will be offered, as well as field trips. The program is sponsored by the state Department of Education. * URGENT FOOD DRIVE -- All of the food that was donated to the Salvation Army last Christmas has already been distributed and a recent Post Office food drive only provided enough food for a week, so the Salvation Army is in urgent need of an estimated 350,000 food items between now and November. Approximately 60,000 food items are distributed each month to needy families and homeless adults and children. If you can help, call 870-4430.

* ONE DOLLAR OFF -- The Great American Train Show is offering $1 off the $5 ticket price in exchange for a food donation to the Salvation Army. The show is Sunday and Monday at Cashman Field. Admission is good for both days and children are free with an adult.

* UNIFORM SALE -- UMC's Auxiliary is having its second annual hospital uniform sale 7 a.m.-5 p.m. today and Thursday at the west entrance, 2020 Building, Cast Clinic. Proceeds will benefit UMC. For more information, call 361-6354.

* HENDERSON SALVATION ARMY -- The Henderson Salvation Army is in dire need of food supplies for its operation. The Henderson Salvation Army has a lack of sites where the public can drop off food donations and its staff is stretched thin, running around town picking up donations. To help, Del Webb offered the Desert Willow Community Center, Sun City MacDonald Ranch, 2020 Horizon Ridge Parkway, as a public drop-off site. Easily stored, primarily boxed and canned food are preferred. Anyone interested in helping out can drop off donations at the front desk of the Desert Willow Community Center.

* GOLF TOURNAMENT VOLUNTEERS -- Opportunity Village Arc will host the Frank Sinatra Las Vegas Celebrity Classic at Stallion Mountain Thursday through Saturday, with a celebrities skins game Sunday. Proceeds from the event will benefit the construction of the new Opportunity Village campus in Henderson and the Barbara Sinatra Children's Center in Palm Springs, Calif. Wayne Newton is the honorary chairman; international celebrities in the fields of entertainment and sports, as well as local celebrities, will be on hand for the event. Volunteers are needed to act as caddies, drivers, registration personnel and security guards. Food and golf shirts will be provided for volunteers during the tournament. Applications may be picked up at any Southern Nevada Dodge Dealer, who will provide the courtesy cars used throughout the tournament. For more information, call 259-3741.

* MDA SUMMER CAMP -- The Muscular Dystrophy Association is currently seeking applications from people who would like to volunteer for a week as counselors at the MDA summer camp. Volunteers act as companions to children and teenagers with neuromuscular diseases during the camp session, July 13-19. Counselors must be 16 years old, able to lift a child, push wheelchairs and assist with grooming, dressing and feeding. * STUDENT HOSPITAL VOLUNTEERS -- Are you a student considering a career in the health-care field? Or looking for something constructive to do this summer? Desert Springs Hospital is recruiting high school and college students over the age of 15 who would like to volunteer at the hospital this summer. Students will be placed in many areas of the hospital, giving them an opportunity to learn about many aspects of healthcare.
