Stars blow early lead against Sky Sox

It sure wasn't a pretty performance from the Las Vegas Stars as the Stars dropped a 6-5 decision to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Cashman Field on Friday night.

Take a look at some of the miscues.

*they stranded 13 runner

*they committed three errors and gave up three unearned runs

*they gave up a four-run lead

*they had 12 batters be retired on strike outs.

The Stars had plenty of chances to win the game. After scoring four runs in the first inning on two run-scoring triples, by Charles Poe and James Mouton, and two-run home run by George Arias, the Stars gave up five runs in the second and never recovered.

The Stars' biggest opportunity to take the lead back came in the eighth inning. Dave Hajek started the rally with a bunt single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Aaron Guiel. Arias loaded the bases with a infield single for Mandy Romero. Romero swung at the first pitch he saw, hitting a slow roller back to Colorado Springs' pitcher Steve Bourgeois who threw home to catcher Dan Cholowsky to force out Hajek and then Cholowsky threw a strike to first to double up Romero. It was that kind of night for the Stars.

In the sixth, the Stars hit into another double play that killed a rally. Entering the inning down 6-4, the Stars got back one run with a Hajek RBI single scoring Doug Dascenzo. With Hajek on first and no outs, Juan Melo hit into a double play to kill the threat.

Las Vegas looked like they were going to blow by Colorado Springs after the first inning. The Stars scored four runs on four hits, including three extra base hits to take a commanding lead.

Las Vegas starter Kevin Lomon, who dropped to 0-5 on the season with the loss, couldn't hold the lead.

Nelson Liriano had a two-run single for the Sky Sox in the rally and Derrick Gibson hit a grounder that was mishandled by Arias at third to allow to more runs to score. Lomon walked Terry Shumpert with the bases loaded to account for the other run.

NOTES

Friday night's attendance was 10,720, the second largest home crowd of the season... Arias' home run in the first was the ninth straight game a Star has homered in, setting a club record...Lomom struck out eight in five and 1/3 innings of work, giving up six runs (three unearned) and scattering six hits...Hajek has hit safely in 31 of the team's last 36 games, raising his batting average to .346... The Stars will start a four-game series against the Salt Lake City Buzz on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Probable starters for game No.1 in the series are Matt Clement (4-4, 3.18) for the Stars and Frank Rodriguez (1-3, 8.10) for the Buzz.
