Airmen hospitalized after attack at Lake Mead

An underage drinking party at Lake Mead got out of hand when some high school students attacked a group of Nellis Air Force Base airmen.

At least one teen hit some of the airmen with a baseball bat, the National Park Service said.

Two airmen, whose names were not released, suffered serious head trauma and were taken to University Medical Center early Saturday.

Witnesses said about 30 or 40 high school students were gathered in the Boxcar Cove area of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area when some of the teens began throwing rocks and threatening campers.

A group of eight airmen were attacked when they refused to leave.

Park rangers were sent to the scene after officials began receiving 911 calls about 1:18 a.m. Saturday.

No arrests were made because the teens fled the scene before the rangers arrived. A vehicle leaving the area was stopped, but no one in the car could be placed at the scene.
