City Council may reconsider proposed pay hike

Councilman Pierre Hatscheff said he plans to bring the proposed pay raise up again at Tuesday's council meeting. He said the council made a mistake by postponing a vote at its Sept. 23 meeting.

The proposal would raise the pay of council members from the current $20,000 to $39,00. The mayor's salary would increase from $25,000 to $49,500.

Current council members wouldn't actually receive the pay hike unless they are re-elected because members aren't allowed to raise their own salary. It would take effect after the next council is elected.

Reno City Council members currently earn more than their counterparts in Sparks and Henderson, but less than city council members in Las Vegas and county commissioners in Washoe and Clark counties.

Clark County commissioners make $54,000 a year, Washoe County $39,600, Las Vegas $36,400 and Henderson $22,324. City council members make about $18,000 a year in Sparks and Carson City.
