Controversy brews over U.S. 50 median

Construction of the 8-mile concrete barrier is to begin this month to help guard against head-on collisions.

But officials for the Carson City and Douglas County sheriff's offices say it may have to be rebuilt. They say the concrete barrier needs at least four openings for emergency vehicles to get through.

Bernie Curtis, chief deputy of the Carson City sheriff's office, said current plans for just one break in the 8-mile barrier are "not tenable.

"It could cause a life-threatening situation," he said.

Engineers for the Nevada Department of Transportation say it's too late because the project is ready to begin construction within a month.

Kelly Anrig, assistant chief safety engineers, said additional openings would tempt unauthorized motorists to make unsafe turns on their own.

The Douglas County Commission plans to discuss the matter next week. The stretch of road between Spooner Summit and U.S. Highway 395 has been the site of numerous fatal accidents over the years.
