Parole denied in Elko murder case

The victim, Roger Broyles, was sitting with Wolford's ex-wife, Laverne, at the bar when Wolford entered. Angry at her ex-husband, she put on a show of kissing Broyles.

Fired by a combination of stress, prescription medication and alcohol, Wolford pulled a gun and shot Broyles in the back.

Wolford now is a model prisoner, a graduate of alcohol and drug programs, involved in Christian activities and employed in prison industry programs.

The board got 18 letters from prominent Elko citizens supporting his release, including the now-retired judge who sentenced him to life.

But the son of the man he shot told the board 13 years isn't enough for ruining his and his family's lives. And he presented petitions signed by nearly 100 people saying that Wolford should stay in prison.

The vote to deny Wolford's parole - but to give him another chance in two years - was unanimous.
